Whether
or not you’re aware of this, we’ve been conditioned by society
(and big tech) to expect big results in as little time as
possible.
Anything from 15-minute pizza delivery guarantee to
2-day Amazon prime
delivery, to instant online downloads, we want
the biggest and best things in life within
minutes.
About the pizza delivery: do you think that
15 minute pizza delivery guarantees is still
the case in most metropolitan areas in the
United States?
And, some of us have become so impatient, we
come to expect that they get delivered like
yesterday.
Talking about setting ourselves up for a big
letdown!
One Impatient World
Talking about an impatient world,
there are enormous challenges in our lives
that’ll take quite some effort, attention and
energy to address and solve.
You might be going through college;
trying to earn a degree; trying to get a dream
job or you might be trying to convince your boss
to give you a well deserved pay rise.
Irrespective of the form your challenge takes, please understand that
it is something you’d have to work on.
About the pizza delivery which I addressed a minute or so ago, today,
we have reached a point where if your pizza guy
does not deliver your pizza within 15 minutes,
you expect a refund because you want that pizza
to be absolutely free for it being delivered
late.
That's how impatient we have become.
And that is why the concept of a march towards
excellence, goals, accomplishments and dreams
have become quite irritating to a lot of people.
In fact, close to 5 out of 10 of us would rather
dispense with that ‘march toward
accomplishments’ and dreams process.
We’ve become so impatient we no longer even want
to follow the instructions given to us in a
how-to information guide.
We want to become an overnight success.
This is what trips up a lot of people.
Your First Step in Any Undertaking
Your initial step in any undertaking is to step
back a little as if you were under 2-years old
learning to properly walk and run without
falling over.
The real accomplishments, occurs, in taking
those first baby steps.
Once you accept that those are part of the ‘Do
NOT
expect big results in as little time as possible’ process; the milestone or goal set that are near and dear
to your heart, and that there are no quick
fixes to anything that’s worth doing or having,
then you’re already half way to accomplishing
that goal.
There' s a big divide between theory and practice. And as someone has so
eloquently said: “We can not do anything
effectively if we do not do it at all”
In terms of doing, this is a huge challenge,
though.
And not just for adults, children are also
impatient.
A common reason for this is impulsivity but
there’s a host of other reasons much of it to do
with the fast pace,
challenges, and influences of modern living
and modern day life.
Overall, though, focus on each baby step
forward.
It may seem small and irritatingly long, but do
not be impatient.
Each baby step forward you take is still a step
forward.
And as we focus on each baby step, each of those
steps represents a victory.
And to quote Jeffery Fry: “It is in the doing
that makes the being worthwhile.”
And, says Woody Zuill: “It is in the doing of
the work that we discover the work that we must
do”
Final Segment Notes
Glad you’ve made it this far.
You probably now know a whole lot more than you
had before in terms of Baby-Stepping, aimed at
helping to keep you steady as you go.
My only regret is this: that I didn’t publish
this article taken from ‘101
Ways To Beat Procrastination'
a long time ago.
It would’ve saved a lot of people a whole lot of
worry, time and pain.
I do hope that I’d be more thoughtful, sensible
and forward-thinking in the next life!
But, perhaps, nothing ever really happens before
its time.
Please note, though, that this is a learning
process. Also, that it isn’t just what
you have learned, or how much, but what you
choose to do with what you have learned.
On that note, stay motivated and
committed to the fight against impatience,
wanting
big results in as little time as possible
but above all, commit to the march towards
excellence, big goals, accomplishments and
dreams.
